Firstly, it goes without saying that the back four were abysmal. Unless you're going to outscore everyone like Brazil can, you have to be solid at the back. We have looked very shaky at the back in all the matches and were lucky to have weak opposition in our first games. They positioned themselves poorly, closed down poorly and worst of all, gave the ball away all too often. Would this have been different with Ferdinand in the side?

Secondly, we have an unbalanced and ineffectual midfield. It lacks any sort of pace or movement, especially off the ball. Even the James was visibly frustrated when trying to play the ball. Their passes always seem to be a yard off, causing players to stop their runs and when a good ball is played, their first touch ruins it all. It says a lot when the only player who looks like developing any chances is our left back, probably our best player in the tournament.

Thirdly, we had no options up front. Playing Rooney is a given but he was poor throughout the competition. Can anybody really say Defoe, Heskey and Crouch are world class? I can understand Capello not putting Crouch on because we weren't able to cross the ball so he'd have been of no use. Defoe seems to be average at everything, whilst I'm not even sure why Heskey was in the squad at all. We had no attacking options whatsoever.

Fourthly, Joe Cole, when played, brought nothing to the game, but that may well relate to point two above.

Finally, this is essentially the same team that failed to qualify for Euro 2008. How can anybody have expected them to do better? More of a worry however is the complete lack of young alternatives. Who do we have coming through? Walcott and...?
