The argument that speed isn't the only factor in road deaths is only useful if you advocate the removal of speed limits. Otherwise, it's just a self-evident statement that takes us nowehere. It ends up being nothing more than a play on words; "it's the deceleration not the speed that kills them" for example.

This argument is quite simple really. Protagonists can change the variables of the argument as much as they like but the reality of the situation does not change: We are in vehicles made by fallible humans, driven by fallible humans. Until such time as this is not the case, or the cost:benefit ratio dictates otherwise, speed limits will be in place.

In Ian's example, the "other side" like to obfuscate the argument with talk of brake condition, better training, road conditions etc. However, you cannot alter the facts of the case. The nurse was on a given road in a given vehicle in a given condition. The police officer was on the same road in a given vehicle in a given condition. In this case, it is the actions of the police officer that determines the outcome at that moment in time. It is his selection of speed that becomes the sole determining factor in the death of the nurse.

Using the same "logic" used by the "other side", it is the nurses fault she was killed by a speeding police officer because she didn't call in sick to work that day.
