Nascar is entertaining enough, at times, but their championships are basically run over ten races. After the first 28 races, the top ten go into "The Chase". The leader gets 5050 points, removing 5 points from each driver thereafter. With the points reset, the final ten races are scored as normal. This year, Carl Edwards lost something like 80 points to Tony Stewart.

The championship mirrors a single race quite closely. It's not about how well you run throughout the race, but where you are at the end. Track position is king. Building up a big lead is rarely possible nor desired.
