Thanks all.. The supplier of my new axle hasn't heard of this before, so I just wanted to check whether it would add any significant strenght, or was need to harness the power of the Biland.

With regards to the liner, I wouldn't have even known it was there unless it had slipped a few mms. When I looked at the key holes, they were eliptical (because the holes in the axle and liner were out of line).

I then tapped the liner and I was able to move it so that the holes were in line again, so clearly its not fixed to the axle.

I can't really understand what value it adds, but your suggestion of removing it and trying to reuse it, is something I will try.
