If you really want to know the manufacturing date, you could ring Tal-Ko and ask. The only way you will know which is the best engine to use, will be to do identical back-to-back testing, using the same set-up and carb with both engines. Performance will be dependent on a large number of factors; how well looked after, how often rebuilt, last rebuild time, etc. Generally there will be no difference just based on the engine number, although new engines, BT6500 onwards, have the new CNC liner as opposed to the cast liner before. Having purchased a new engine for my son in June this year, he has gone on to record a number of impressive performances.
