Hi michael, my 8 year old son started karting this year. We have went down the Honda Cadet route, purely to keep costs down and to allow me to learn the sport. Comer engines from what i can see require more work to that of the honda (oil & plug change is pretty much all that is involved) which allows me more time to learn about chassis set up etc. Costs for running a honda arent high, we run on a small budget. i would however reccomend going to your local kartiing club and check out grid sizes before making your choice. and most importantly - dont buy the first kart you see. we were lucky and got a great kart, but have heard about some nightmare purchases.
good luck.
