Your throttle could have been stuck open, This is often caused by the outer part of your throttle cable (Bowden Cable is the correct name for that ype of cable) getting stuck out of the 'cup' of one of the 'adjsuters'.
Or, you simply have excess AIR getting into the system. This could EASILY be a hole in the tilly wall. In the old days, it was a RGULAR occurrence for the chain to 'saw' through the lowest part of the carb! Your 'off' could easily have done this.
The next possibility is that the carb was not bolted back tightly or that the gaskest were missing. Next would be that your Oil Seals on the crank shaft are old and wrn and air is getting in, there!
Have a look at that lot and come back to us.
