Miffy, I would say between 7 - 11 is an ideal range when racing.
If lower than 7 then eat 10 - 20g of carbohydrate.
If higher than 12-13 you should take some short acting insulin to bring them down as too high sugars will impair your reactions and saps strength.
If your "doctor" is a GP then ask to be referred to the nearest Specialist Hospital Clinic for Diabetes. Most GP's have a limited knowledge of Type 1 Diabetes and if you are not on what's called a Basal/Bolus insulin regime you should ask to be put on one. This means you inject short acting insulin before each meal and as or when required and makes it much easier to keep sugar levels within the ideal range.
