Compaq laptop - System restore question??

I currently have a laptop where there is a problem downloading any sort of program. This is causing problems when i need to install programs in order to complete my coursework.

My question is, if i was to go through the system restore manager and take the laptop back to original factory settings, this will allow me to start from square one again wont it? I have backed up all my important documents so that isnt a problem but i want to be sure that im not going to suffer any bigger problems that im ignorant to.

Sorry if the question makes litle sense. Im just concerned because i dont want to completely wreck my laptop.
