Regarding out the box engines, even without the time and effort you will find it costs you nearly as much to get the extra race bits on an engine than it does to buy a race ready one.
As for recommending an engine builder, IMO nowadays they all produce quick engines. If any one builder is getting more results it comes down to market share more than anything else and as I said before, parts selected engines don't appear by magic. If it takes 10 engines to find the best bits then 9 people are buying 'bad' parts selected engines. The fact that we hear so few complaints goes to show how close standard engines are now.
