No, seriously, FB was once putting up the biggest grids at Wigan and in Scotland.

The rest is politics, certain traders wanted FB to go into higher and more expensive championships and campaigned vociferously when the importer maintained that it was to remain an essentially clubman class within the auspices of the NKRA rather than the ABkC

Whether it was wise to limit the economic opportunities of traders who weren't shy about announcing their dissent (and Ron would infuriate even a saint like me at times) is a matter for a different debate.
