Why are head restraints fitted to cars? I am invited to believe in a host of mythological 'facts' relating to kart setup and mechanical enhancments banded around paddocks every race weekend! If we apply medical physics, mechanics and the evidence from decades of RTA safety and testing, its not difficult to predict the that slowing and preventing an over extension of the neck muscles and spinal cord on impact in a kart, even by a smal amount, prevents or reduces whiplash risk in younger drivers. This would apply in any vehicle. The neck brace does this by dampening the edge of the helmet, reducing neck extension. When seasoned or older karters have developed stronger neck physiology, then is not such and issue.
