Have a google on the startup current requirement of a 1.5hp electric motor on a compressor. There's no way a 1000w inverter will start it. I've got a small Clarke compressor with a 1.25hp motor. My 2.2kw generator just about starts it with nothing else on.

If you want to run on a 12v battery and 1000w inverter you will need one of the small silent compressors with a tank - Have a look at the Machine Mart website if you're not sure what I mean. They are expensive, but they have a small tank and use a 0.5hp motor. I have used one of these with a 1kw inverter, and it will pop cadet tyres on rims. A bit slow to refill the tank but they do work.
