You will definitely start a massive debate...

It's a very difficult question to answer, as it really depends on what you include and who you are trying to impress.

For example, a lot of people will include travel, food, hotels etc., particularly if doing nationals in the overall cost.

Also, it depends on if you are including equipment, and at what level you're planning to compete (e.g. a Honda engine can cost anywhere between Ł500 for a clubman, to Ł5000+ for a S1 with pedigree).

Even team fees can vary from Ł50/day to Ł500+/day.

To answer one bit though, team/mechanic fees are generally a pretty significant part of the ongoing cost, so I would say privateers do spend considerably less.
