Daytona Combined Winter Endurance Series

Daytona - Combined Winter Endurance Series
Round 2 - 25th January 2004 - Daytona Milton Keynes

Despite a dubious forecast, the teams were greeted by a beautiful winter’s day, a dry track and an excellent turn out of teams including 13 Prokarts.

Qualifying saw an all Thunderkart front row courtesy of Blue Thunder and Bad News, with SAS Racing and the Biland of Special Racing Projects making up the second row.

With the drop of the green flag, the Thunderkart pack roared off into the distance, but within the very first few laps, the Prokart of Team Slick lost a track rod and the Promax’s of Mister Igloo and 40 Racing suffered a chain loss and a radiator failure respectively, effectively putting paid to any hope of success.

The 7-lap advantage for the Prokarts and World Formula class, soon elevated them to the top of the leader board and with half an hour gone, it was Team X who were setting the pace from Stormy Normans and the WF kart of Spencer Motorsport.

At quarter distance the first non Prokart on the leader board was the Biland of SRP, closely followed by the Thunderkart pack, but they had only made up a lap and a bit on the flying Prokart of Team X. Eau-Rouge were the next on the casualty list, whilst Grassroots, JKP Racing and Skidmarks all moved up to within striking distance of second placed Stormy Normans.

With one third distance completed, the Thunders were now only 4 laps adrift of the Prokarts, with the exception of Team X, who were going like a steam train and had put a lap on there nearest rivals, Stormy Normans. Shortly afterwards, the WF kart of 3rd place Spencer Motorsport had what can only be safely described as a ‘hanging’ moment, suffice to say that it led to their retirement, leaving JKP Racing in second place from Pogue Mahone, Stormy Normans, Focus and Westco.

At the half way stage, the Thunderkarts had caught some of the slower classes and were only a lap and a bit behind the second place Prokart of Stormy Normans. However the leading Prokart of Team X was a further 2 laps up the road and only lapping two and a half seconds per lap slower. SRP then pitted for an unscheduled stop and then incurred a 1-lap penalty for brain fade, dropping then back to 8th place and 2 laps behind the chasing Thunderkarts of Blue Thunder and Bad News.

With an hour and a half to go, Bad News pitted but were still in 5th place just behind Westco and Stormy Normans, Blue Thunder were up to 2nd and now in hot pursuit of Team X and JKP Racing along with Focus were in 6th and 7th places respectively, just in front of the recovering Biland of SRP. Blue Thunder then pitted allowing Bad News to come up and join them, but both Thunders were still adrift of the leading Prokart of Team X until they too pitted for a splash and dash, putting all 3 on the same lap with 15 minutes to go.

In the closing stages of the race, SRP made a flying finish, picking off 3 or 4 Prokarts to finish a creditable 4th, Bad news were not going to catch the Prokart of Team X, but in the dieing laps, Blue Thunder cruised passed the leaders to snatch the win- and the Championship.
