CIK-FIA European Superkart Championship

CIK-FIA European Superkart Championship
Round
1 - Hockenheim - 7th May 2005

A very wet opening round in Hockenheim.

Held in attrocious conditions, British drivers had a tremendous opening event at the European Superkart Championships (Divison 1) at Hockenhiem.

Graham Barker splashed his way to victory in the first of the days’ two championship races, whilst John Riley redressed the balance by taking Round 2 later in the day. Damian Payart posted quickest time in qualifying ahead of Barker and Riley but it was British driver Riley who led for most of the race 1until mechanical problems ended his run with two laps to go. Barker took up the mantle and cruised to victory ahead of Joachim Breckwoldt and Andreas Mairzedt. Vic Hemshall was the next best UK finisher down in 8th place, whilst pre race favourite Mark Owens failed to finish. Defending champion Damian Payart took 5th place.

In Round two Gavin Bennett was the early leader but Barker had taken the lead by the halfway mark, Bennett dropped to 5th with Riley moving into 2nd and Payart 3rd. Barker failed to complete the next lap, a snapped chain the cause of his retirement, and it was Riley who now led, Owens had put his earlier trouble behind him and was now challenging for 2nd place and on the next lap took Payart, he also set fastest lap in the process. Behind, Antoine Lacoste and Mairzedt were threatening and both drivers slipped past Payart into 3rd and 4th, Lacoste then set about Owens and with a lap to run he moved into 2nd, Owens looked to be having problems with the wet conditions and he would drop to 9th position at the flag. Race leader Riley maintained his advantage to the flag, Lacoste closing slightly on the final lap, Mairzedt took 3rd with Payart 4th, Bennett was 5th from Thomas Johnasson and Steve White who was making his European debut a very creditable 7th.

Formula 125 UK Cup – 8th May 2005. Ward victorious at Donington Park.

Richard Ward took the title of UK Cup winner at Donington last weekend, 8th May.

In the first of the two races Richard Ward and Paul Platt had a real ding-dong battle with Platt victorious. Race 2 and again he and Platt scrapped for the lead, and with a lap to run Ward led Platt latched onto his bumper, but as they rounded Coppice for the final time a backmarker held Platt momentarily and this allowed Ward a small but crucial advantage, Platt closed as they neared the flag but Ward just held on as they crossed the line. Based on a two race
