The Karting Kid
"Every Body, Needs Some Body"

There's a hierachy of power in just about every sport, and karting is no different.  The Karting Kid gives us a run-down of who exactly governs our sport.

" Every Body, Needs Some Body "

It's difficult to understand who Governs our sport, to help your understanding, here's a short explanation of who runs who;

FIA Worldwide motorsport is governed by the FIA who we know better for being the Governing body of F1 and various other lower Formulae. Britain Max Mosely is at the helm of the FIA, which should be a boost for British Motorsport. Although Britain is represented in general, like any other member Nation, The MSA have just lost their place on the Governing Council.

CIK The Worldwide Governing Body for Karting, who by delegation from the FIA run Karting at World & European Championship levels, homologating and forming classes to be run Internationally. The CIK was run until recently by Swiss guru Ernst Buser, who ran the CIK very much as a dictatorship, now in theory power has been passed to ex FIA men, with the British interests being represented by the MSA's Tony Newsum and Paul Gladstone, although Graham Butterworth is making current representations on behalf of the BKIA.

Royal Automobile Club (formerly understood as the RAC to most of us) Now the ultimate Board of Appeal for British Motorsport disputes, where respected members of this gentleman's club eg Jackie Stewart form a panel to hear any deserving case that makes it to these heady heights under the auspices of justice being seen to be done.

Motor Sports Council or MSC MSC hold right to run Motorsport in Britain and Northern Ireland through the power of delegation from the FIA. MSC formulate executive committees who advise on the running of Motorsport, they also form the first body of appeal after race day.

Motor Sports Association or MSA (formerly the RAC MSA) MSC leave the MSA to do the day to day running of Motorsport and in reality this is the body who effectively runs and Governs the sport as we know it, issuing, licences, permits and generally administering the sport on everyone's behalf.

ABkC (Association of British Kart Clubs) Formulated a decade ago to give the Kart Clubs a better voice in the administration of the sport. Although the ABkC was formulated as a pressure group it has evolved as a rule making body for it's member Clubs and Championships and often takes the lead in the way the sport moves forward.

N4SKRA (National 4 Stroke Kart Racing Association) Formulated to regulate 4 stroke Karting in this Country and Co-ordinate Championships.

NKRA (National Kart Racing Association) Started initially as a regional association, it became initially a less successful competitor of the ABkC, but has evolved into a highly successful body providing a National Club Championship, providing excellent Club racing across different circuits and has filled a void between Club racing and major National Championships.

ASKC (Association of Scottish Kart Clubs) Fulfils a similar role to the ABkC but specifically with Scottish Karting in mind. The ASKC runs it's own Championships, both as a series and a one day Scottish Championship.

NIKA (Northern Ireland Karting Association) As the ASKC but looking after the interests of Karting in Northern Ireland, again running varying Championships from series to one offs.

Although it can be difficult to understand who runs which bit of your sport, if you really want to influence things then the route to all these Body's is through your Club, so if you either want to grumble or have a constructive suggestion you wish to air, do it through your Club and who knows, your last thought might be tomorrow's regulation.

The Kid.
