The Karting Kid
"Can I Take The Wife?"

Kart circuits are usually judged for the quality of the track, but as family members and spectators know, good facilities are important too.  The Karting Kid gives us a guide to the track and facilities of many of the country's kart circuits.

" Can I Take The Wife? "

Kart circuits have evolved from a group of enthusiasts driving around a few straw bales to the purpose built PFI type facility. Many circuits like Shenington, Rissington and Fulbeck still stand on old RAF Base sites, whilst venues like PFI, Warden law and Buckmore Park are purpose built for our modern day sport.

The facilities the circuits offer are completely varied with different 'owners' putting the emphasis on different creature comforts or facilities, e.g. take the 2 tracks side by side in Fulbeck and PFI and although they both cater well for our sport they couldn't be further apart in what they provide with PFI having toilets and showers to die for, a grandstand and even a play area for the kids, but an ok track, whereas Fulbeck has one of the best tracks in the Country but little else. Before the people who run these venues get too angry about the previous comments, firstly it's true and secondly they are run and financed in completely different ways with completely different restrictions as to what they can achieve and our sport needs both types of venue. Because the facilities vary so much the following is a guide (not complete and doesn't cover every venue, but will in time) to MSA licensed tracks following the traditional star rating system, but using a 'K' instead. The Karting Kid's unique rating varies between 0 and 5 K's, so no K’s means that you will not miss much if you gave it a miss and 5K’s means magnificent. So if you want a good family weekend out, then PFI is the only venue that will impress your wife, however the pure racer may want to visit a different venue for their excitement. All the circuits should be striving to make PFI's facilities their minimum standard. It is good to see that places like Golspie, Buckmore Park and Rowrah have spent their money on making a better track for the driver and in turn should be a lesson for PFI. Committees often sit with your money in their accounts, when in reality it might be more wisely re-invested in the venue.

The Kid.
